3 Easy Steps to Happiness

September 22, 2012

Want a Happy Marriage? Start by being grateful! Studies show that simply expressing gratitude will cause you to be happier. While being grateful and happy won’t fix any relationship problems you may be going through, having that positive attitude will make it easier to work together to tackle the problem instead of attacking each other.

Here are some suggestions to help you start to be more grateful:

1. Make a list of things that make your life easier: Do you have a running car? Running Water? Food on the table? Supportive family or friends? These are all things that not everyone has so even if you don’t have it all, remember to appreciate the things you do have.

2. Once you start to realize your life isn’t all bad try focusing your gratitude towards your partner. In the past week has your significant other voluntarily cleaned up part of the house, replaced the empty toilet paper roll, taken the kids off your hands, or maybe he/she did something as simple as getting the dirty socks to make it into the laundry basket? Remember to start small with your appreciation.

3. If you are having a hard time being thankful for these things try lowering your expectations a little. Even if you’ve discussed who is in charge of which chores remember that (just like you) your partner can be forgetful, have an exceptionally stressful day or have a different set of priorities. As a result you can’t expect perfection from him every day, so when he is having one of those less than perfect days cut him some slack! Then, when he still manages to help clear the table after dinner, remember to be grateful!
